I've never had to configure a bootloader before, so I just want to go about it with care.

However, Debian won't play along. I installed Plan 9 and v7x86, and Debian. I installed GRUB2 to sda5, and rebooted, and rebooted. When I got to the loader, I saw Debian had been added F3? I've installed multiple times, now. As for how to configure things in BSD though you will have to find someone that likes it.
There are a few here, myself, I am just a Linux guy. Yes you can have n number of operating systems and boot any one using grub it must be detectable by grub It does not matter which comes first.
